Junior theater festival
Produced by iTheatrics and sponsored by Music Theatre International and Disney Musicals, the Junior Theater Festival is the biggest and best festival dedicated to young people and musical theatre. The Junior Theater Festival brings together people from all aspects of theater, ranging from students and teachers to Broadway professionals, under one roof to celebrate outstanding student musical theatre productions. The festival offers an enthusiastic environment for students and teachers to interact with thousands of others who share their passion for musical theater. Each group performs a selection from a Broadway Junior or KIDS Collection musical for professional adjudication by a distinguished panel of international theater professionals. Groups participate in interactive workshops lead by Broadway and West End professionals, meet celebrities like Zac Efron (JTF 2007 guest) Skylar Astin, Stephen Schwartz (and many more!) plus enjoy professional development, fellowship, and attend a world-class professional production.
Plaza Academy at JTF
Every year Plaza Academy students attend The Junior Theater Festival (JTF). The world’s biggest and best celebration of young people performing musical theater. JTF brings together student musical theater troupes from all over the world for a weekend of musical theater mayhem and madness.
For the past 3 years Plaza Academy has attended the Jr. Theatre Festival in Alanta Georgia, where we have won several awards including, Excellence in Dance (2017, 2018, 2019), Out Standing Male Performer (Nathan Salter 2017), Freddie G Fellowship Award (2018 Tina Barrus) We look forward to taking groups to both JTF Atlanta and JTF West in Sacramento on Jan and Feb of 2020.
This group of students grades 2-8 will take a cut to the Junior Theater Festival
that will come from the Youth Summer Camp show. This group is NOT a
weekly class. They will audition in the summer and meet for rehearsals once
a month, and then several times a month as JTF draws closer.
This is a class for advanced and experienced Teen Musical Theatre students. This group of students will go to the Junior Theater Festival in January, and then go on to perform the full production of that show in the Spring. They will present their
Spring show in a Junior Theater Festival style of performance, focusing on physicality, character, and group movement instead of using costumes and sets.
This class will meet weekly for an hour and a half and will delve into character development, physicality and movement for the stage, and storytelling using dance and music. This class will audition in the Summer and begin classes as part of the Fall semester. To be in this class, students must pass the audition with no focus or behavior issues, and be able to meet the following requirements:
- No behavior or focus issues from previous classes or shows.
- A minimum of one year Musical Theatre experience (Our classes, shows with us or elsewhere, classes at schools or with other Theater programs).
- CURRENTLY receiving training in Dance. We offer many classes at our studio, but classes at other studios or school will also fulfill this requirement.
- CURRENTLY receiving training in singing. We have three teachers who teach privately at our studio, and we will be offering a Singing for Musical Theatre class for those who need to meet this requirement. Choir or private teachers elsewhere also fulfill this requirement. In August before the semester starts we will do a one day all-day intensive to kick off the class. Students will also be required to attend a few evening rehearsals in January right before the festival.
